3 Ways to Make Some Time for You

I think that it’s appropriate to talk about taking time for yourself on Mother’s Day.

And yes, I know it’s Mother’s Day evening as I write this, and that you may be reading it after Mother’s Day and that you might not even be a mom.

All of that is OK.

The important thing is to take time for yourself.

What’s that you say?

As a matter of fact, I do know how busy you are and how there isn’t enough time in the day.

And that is exactly why you need to find some time for yourself.

You may or may not know that for the last 5 months I have been caring for my 92 year old dad whose health is declining quickly.

I know about not having time for yourself.

I have also learned the hard way why it’s so important that you do it anyway.

I’m not asking for an hour or even 30 minutes. How about 10? Could you work 10 minutes for yourself somewhere in your day?

I know you can.

Here are three ways to do just that:

1. Find a place to hide. Really. I found out that no one ever uses our front porch for anything other than going in the front door. And that even if I put a chair out there and put it in just the right spot so it’s hard to see from inside, no one thinks to look for me there.

I also have standing offers from 2 friends to feel free to invade their yard or deck when I need to get away.

Locking yourself in the bathroom will work too. Maybe. If you have small children or pets, maybe not. Or inquisitive grandsons.

And if you spend extra time in the laundry room, I bet no one will know you are there.

2. Take a drive. It’s been stressful in our house for months for all of us. Sometimes one of us will run to the “hardware store” or “to get milk”. Sometimes this takes longer than you might think. That’s OK.

3. Get some really good headphones and tune in to music or meditation for a few minutes while tuning out what’s around you.

Some other ideas:

  • Take a minute or two for deep breathing
  • Get an essential oil or blend that helps you relax
  • Try Passion Flower or Valerian (both herbs – Valerian is stinky but good) for calming
  • Go outside and walk around the yard. It can help more than you realize.
  • Have a good laugh
  • Call a friend
  • Try to look for the positive in the situation

Taking a few minutes each day for yourself helps you clear your head and recharge a little bit. Oh, and don’t forget to listen to your body and take a break when you need one, regardless of what needs to be done.

And finally, just let go of anything non essential. Just for now.
