The Order of Our Days

31 Day Challenge: Day 29

When you were a little girl, did you ever have a set of those panties with the days of the week on them?

Or maybe when you got older you had something with the rhymes about washing on Monday and ironing on Tuesday.

When my husband and I were first married, my mother in law cross stitched some tea towels with those rhymes.

These days most of us don’t live by those old lines. The laundry gets done when we can get to it and who irons anymore?

Still the idea of assigning certain tasks to certain days holds some appeal.

It’s one way that those of us with ADHD, who struggle to find order in our lives, might begin to establish some.

And if you take a good look at your life, you might find that you are already using this very system.

For instance, most of us get paid on a regular basis, often on Fridays. That means that Fridays are banking and bill paying days, and pizza night too.

Many of us run our errands on the weekends, notably Saturday, and get the bulk of our cleaning done then too.

And you know that Sunday nights are reserved for looking ahead to the coming week and making plans.

Whether you do or do not have those kinds of plans in place, you are always free to add some or add more.

Maybe the day before garbage day can be clean out the refrigerator day.

When I was growing up, Sundays were roast days – chicken, beef, or pork – my mom always made a roast. That way there were leftovers for later in the week when she was busier.

At my house now, Mondays are my kitchen cleaning days, when I give it a little extra attention.

Assigning certain tasks to certain days provides some structure and rhythm to your life and keeps you on track.

And if you miss Tuesday ironing day, no worries. It will be back around in a week.
