ADD Attacks!

Jump to:

I guess “attacts” is a bit dramatic, but still, I was caught completely off guard earlier this week when I had an “ADD moment”.

I think that the world can be divided into 2 categories: those who read directions, and those who don’t. And for the most part, I think that, whether you were drawing lines based on reading directions or gender, you would end up with pretty much the same group.

In other words, women read directions and men don’t. Right? Uh, not necessarily.

About two weeks ago, I bought some new software that I am very excited about. It will change the way I do business and the way that you can communicate with me. I hope that you will be as excited as I am when I am finally ready to unveil it.

The unveiling has been delayed, in some part due to my ADD moment. Like all software, it came with instructions, which I (being a woman) read. I did, really.

Everything was going very smoothly until I hit a snag. The software was supposed to do something that it just would not do. I couldn’t make it do it. I read the instructions again, but to no avail.

Finally, in desperation, I contacted the man who created the software. He’s a very nice man, and patient, too. He very kindly explained to me that, in the manual, on page XX, I would find the answer to my problem. I looked, and sure enough, there it was.

I am ashamed to say it was not the last time the poor man had to deal with me, and each time (except one), the result was the same. That last time, I found a little error, which he is having his developer check. I feel somewhat better about being such a nuisance.

I tell you this story in an effort to help you understand how ADD works. You read something, you read it again, and still you don’t get it. In this case, I literally didn’t get it. I don’t mean that I didn’t understand it – it was more as though parts of what I read in that manual disappeared into a black hole in my brain, with no reccollection of my ever having read it.

Times like that can make you feel stupid if you let them. Those are the times when you remind yourself how smart and wonderful you really are, and remember that we all have our moments of one kind or another.
