Are You Taking Care of You?

Jump to:

You know, as an ADD Mom, it’s vitally important that you take good care of yourself, including your ADHD.

All moms are good at putting themselves last, but if you have ADHD, you owe it to yourself and your family to make yourself a priority.

When you are tired, run down and stressed, your ADHD symptoms get worse – even if you’re on medication. And when your ADHD symptoms are affecting your life, it can make things worse for everyone. You forget things more often, and you’re less organized. You’re running late, you can’t find what you need and your brain is in a fog.

You know the saying – when mama ain’t happy, nobody’s happy.

If you’re the ADD Mom who’s home is in chaos and who’s constantly running from here to there and always behind, you must start taking better care of yourself now. The house can wait, the family can wait. Once you get yourself together, the rest will follow.

Here are some ideas from my Med Free with ADD program to get you on the right foot. They work if you’re taking medication, too.

Get enough rest. Stop going to bed late and getting up early. Make sure you get a minimum of 7 hours of sleep every night. That’s sleep – not time spent lying in bed thinking too much.

Keep your body hydrated. 8 glasses a day is a good start. Make sure to drink one glass per hour so that your hydration level stays even. If you hate water, use one of those flavor packets in it. Coffee and tea don’t count as water.

Focus on protein instead of carbs. Have some lean protein at every meal to keep your brain at it’s best. There are all kinds of protein bars and drinks out there, so you’ve got no excuse not to add more protein to your diet.

Exercise at least 3 times a week. I know you hate it, but I’m going to change your focus. Exercise is no longer about losing weight and “sculpting your body”. This is exercise for your brain. You still move your body, but your brain benefits. I’ve found that when I look at exercise that way, I’m more willing to do it.

Spend some time outdoors every day. Lots of time is good, but even a little can make a difference.

Build in some time for yourself every day just to relax and unwind, even if it’s only a few minutes.

Now I bet I know what you’re thinking – none of this is new – you’ve heard it all before. Sure, you’ve heard it, but have you actually done it? Consistently?

My Med Free with ADD program is based on science as well as experience. It’s simplicity does not lessen it’s effectiveness. The tips above are a beginning. Give them a try and see how much better you feel.
