Know Your ADD Symptoms

Jump to:

As you know, my ADD symptoms have been giving me trouble lately. I’m still taking a look at what I might need to change in terms of lifestyle (or where I’ve gone astray) so that I can get back on track.

It’s important that you really get to know your ADD symptoms so that you can tell when something’s off. That means that you need to be more self-aware and in the moment more of the time. I know that’s not always easy, but you can continue to try.

Eventually you will get into the habit of recognizing ADD flare ups when they happen. Knowing that you are having a bad ADD day will help you get through it easier, and if you know some of your triggers, you’ll know ahead of time that the day might be a difficult one.

For instance, if not enough sleep makes you unfocused and fuzzy headed, then you know what nights are especially important for a good sleep, like the night before an important meeting. And if you happen to not get a good night’s sleep, well you know what kind of day it’s going to be.

Sometimes we don’t know what’s triggering ADD symptoms. In that case, it’s important to recognize them when they show up.

One especially important time is when you’re driving. If you notice you’re stopping a little too abruptly, driving mindlessly on autopilot, or having one too many close calls, it’s time to wake up. Just knowing that your brain is having an ADD attack can be enough to help you stay alert and more mindful of your driving.

There are lots of other times when an ADD moment can be dangerous – preparing a meal, operating machinery, even walking down the street. Learn to recognize when it happens to you so that you can stay safe.
