Explaining My ADHD Brain

Jump to:

Edit: 3/15/19. A useful post, despite the mention of a Palm Pilot.

It occurred to me, as it sometimes does, that my most recent post might not have seemed as relevant to you as it did to me. There is a reason for that – it’s the way the ADHD mind works.

I made an analogy recently about ADHD and hyperlinks on a website – how you are at one site, see a link for another site and click on it, do it a few more times, and end up someplace entirely different than where you began.

People with Attention Deficit Disorder have minds that operate kind of the same way.

For instance, this afternoon I went to visit a friend and see her new house. As she was showing me around, she mentioned that even though they had lived in the house for 3 months, she hadn’t done much to it yet.

My reply to that comment was something about how my cousin in Kentucky had a really cool historic house.

See the connection?

No, she didn’t either.

Here’s what went on in my head: I know just what she means about living in a house for a while and having it look pretty much the same as the day you moved in, bare white walls and all. We’ve been in our house for 2 years, and most of it still looks the same way.

On the other hand, I got to see my cousin’s house this past weekend; she’s lived there for 8 months, and she has really decorated it to show off her personal style.

Of course, my friend didn’t know any of that, so my comment didn’t make much sense.

Lucky for me, she knows me, and just waited for the explanation she knew was coming.

This kind of thing doesn’t happen to ADDers all the time, but it does happen. Hopefully, now you can understand it a little better.

The point of all this was to say that perhaps the example I used to illustrate the usefulness of a Palm Pilot was not the best choice; maybe I should have used something related more to ADHD.

For me, it was the most comprehensive example I could think of, so I went with it. Hopefully you can see ways in which it might be useful in ADD terms.

The other point I wanted to make is that when I recommend a product, it is because I sincerely believe it has merit. I don’t make any money from it. On the rare occasion that I do, I will let you know up front. And I still won’t recommend something that I don’t believe to be useful just to make a little bit of money. The ultimate price I would pay is too high.
