ADD and All

This week, Tuesday’s Ten Minute Tip comes in written form. I just don’t have the energy to wrestle with the audio monster tonight.

I believe that people with Attention Deficit Disorder spend far too much time taking stock of themselves, measuring themselves against other people, and coming up short. I know I do.

We’re used to not measuring up, to not doing a good enough job, to messing up once again. It’s the story of our lives. We could have done better, we are capable of doing better, but in the end, we forgot, we lost it, we got distracted or bored and we just quit.

You know what? I’m tired of living this way. I’m tired of trying to fit my life into somebody else’s vision of ideal, and you should be, too. It’s time every one of us started living our lives, ADD and all.

So what if your house is a little cluttered, or you forgot to do a load of laundry and now no one has clean socks? Are those things really important in the big scheme of things? Of couse not.

Now I’m not saying you should turn into a free spirit who never does laundry or cleans the house because you’ve got ADD and you’re going to live your life. You can’t neglect whatever responsibilities you have just because you have ADD.

What you can do, though, is quit giving yourself a mental beating every time you don’t follow through. Just do the best you can every day. Some days, you’ll be able to do a lot, and other days, not so much. Cut yourself some slack and learn to treat yourself as well as you do others. That’s my plan.
