ADD Moms: Basic Home Care

Once you get the concept of self care and how important it is, you can begin to get your home in better order. And no, don’t try it the other way. We as women are conditioned to put ourselves last; it doesn’t work that way. Once you are feeling your best and addressing your needs, you can give to others.

All of us have different homes and different challenges, but here are some basic guidelines:

In general, certain things are common to us all and have to be taken care of regularly. This includes keeping the kitchen and bathrooms clean, providing meals, clean clothes, and maintaining a home that is at least functional. By that I mean that there are places to sit, light to read by, a place for meals and a place to sleep. If you’ve seen Hoarders, you know what I mean.

Start with the biggest problem that you have, but don’t feel as though you have to tackle it all at once.

For instance, if all is running well in your home, but there is a huge laundry monster lurking somewhere and finding clean socks is a continual issue, then the laundry is where you begin. Start by doing a load or two of socks, if that’s the issue. What you’re trying to do is eliminate anything that causes stress. Once everyone can relax about having clean socks, you can begin to do the rest of the laundry.

If there is clutter all about the house, start with where it causes the most trouble and begin to clear that out.

For a lot of us, our homes are pretty much presentable most of the time and things just get out of control now and then. The bigger issue is that we just aren’t interested in housework.

As ADDers, we have a low threshold for boredom, and let’s face it, housework is boring.

We like having a clean house and we do sometimes get that good feeling when all is sparkly and clean, but that doesn’t happen on a regular enough basis to motivate us.

The key to that is to micromanage things.

Let’s say you clean the bathroom once a week, and by day 6, it’s looking a little gross and it will take you about 20 minutes to get it back in shape.

Why not take that 20 minutes and space it out through the week instead?

At least once a day, while you’re in there anyway, wipe out the sink and shine the faucets. Swish the toilet and wipe out the tub after your shower. This way, the bathroom never really gets dirty and gross. Sure you can give it a deeper cleaning once a week, but it will only take a few minutes.

Start building these smaller routines into your day and housework can all but disappear. Cool.
