ADHD and Finances

Among the struggles that people with ADHD have, managing money ranks right up there at the top. Our forgetfulness, lack of attention, risk taking and impulsive behaviors can all add up to trouble with money.

Some of us are lucky to live with someone who can handle the finances for us. That’s a real blessing because it takes a lot of stress off of us and our families.

Others have to struggle through as best as we can.

In my family, both my husband and I have ADHD. The way we have chosen to manage our finances (and it took us a long time to get there) is that I manage the day to day money situations and any large spending decisions are made together.

I monitor our account daily and try to stick to a budget as much as I can. I automate our bills as much as I can and keep track of them in my planner.

We do not have any credit cards or debt other than our mortgage. We have an accountant who does our taxes.

If you are having problems managing your money or just would like to improve in that area, there are places you can go to get help. Here are a few:

Dave Ramsay A well respected and nationally recognized authority on money.

Debt Proof Living Mary Hunt’s site has been around a long time and Mary is well known for her money management strategies.

Adult ADD and Money John MacKenzie’s site. A valuable resource because it addresses both ADHD and money.

ADD-ADHD Coaching offers a free money management email course. Worth checking out!

If you’re having money issues due to your ADHD, don’t continue to ignore it and hope it will go away. It won’t. Please find some help soon.
