Herbal Alternatives to ADHD?

Last time, I mentioned some of the responses I have received from my radio interview with Aurelia Williams from Parenting My Teen.

Marguerite Wright is a Certified Herbalist and Health Consultant who owns Mother Knows Best. She contacted me right after my interview to ask me to share her site with parents who are looking for a natural alternative to treating the symptoms of Attention Deficit Disorder. She also sent me a link to a very informative article that she had written about this subject.

I have used herbs and herbal supplements myself to treat health problems unrelated to AD/HD. I saw a nutritionist several years ago in relation to some problems I was having with my stomach, and she recommended the use of herbs and herbal supplements, as well as dietary changes, to bring me back to health. As it happens, they were the same products that Marguerite sells on her site.

I like the idea of using something that is natural, and I have found that the products that I have used have worked very well. I think in general herbs take longer to work than a drug might, but that also means that they tend to be gentler to your system. You also have less side effects from herbs than you might from an over the counter or prescription drug.

I have often checked out herbal remedies for Attention Deficit Disorder that I see in the health food stores, and I have almost always been disappointed. Most of them contain herbs that have a calming effect, like chamomile, but very little else of any use. An herb like chamomile is a good start, and it will help with the hyperactive component of AD/HD, but what I believe is more important is treating the symptoms of inattention and distractibility.

I had this in mind when I first talked with Marguerite, and I have to say, she didn’t disappoint me. Given my interest in both herbs and AD/HD, I have done a small amount of research on the subject and therefore know some of the things that might be more useful and appropriate. When it comes to herbs, diet, and AD/HD, Marguerite knows everything I know and way more. Her recommendations were right on track with what I’ve read myself. I am truly impressed.

Marguerite says that she makes a full evaluation of a person and their lifestyle before recommending any program, and she believes that diet is also an important factor in treating AD/HD. In fact, she says that you should have some protein for breakfast every day, either in the form of food, or as a supplement.

I will be checking out Marguerite’s site further, and may even try some herbal remedies for AD/HD. I’ll keep you posted.

Please note: I am not implying that you should treat AD/HD with herbs instead of prescriptions. I am merely presenting this as an alternative for those who may be interested.
