31 Day Challenge: Day 15

Since we are talking all things orderly this month, I thought that it would be appropriate to point out that October is ADHD Awareness month.

(Yes I am taking advantage of the fact that the word order is part of disorder, but I can still make it relevant.)

Now of course the word Disorder when used with Attention Deficit implies a certain condition or perhaps a difficulty. When you put it all together, it’s apparent that our difficulty is in paying attention.

We all know that there is much more to ADHD than just not being able to focus and stay on task, but there it is in it’s most basic form.

The word disorder can also be applied to us because we do have trouble maintaining order in our lives. Sometimes people with ADHD can appear to have orderly lives, but often at the expense of complicated forms, lists, or systems that constrict their every day life.

And of course there are those at the far end of the spectrum who have genuine hoarding issues.

Not to be too gloomy, there are some of us who can maintain a fairly orderly existence. Sometimes it just depends on the season of life that you are in. For instance, if you have a toddler or two, most people could forgive a little mess.

So why do have such troubles with maintaining order?

First, the idea of order, of keeping things neat and easy to find, is a linear or left brained one. I guarantee every successful professional organizer out there is left brained. Their brains are made to function in an orderly, linear manner.

We are mostly right brained people. We are creative and spontaneous. Our brains are made to see things from a different perspective; we can envision and see connections between things that others do not.

All of this means that order does not come naturally to us, and yet we need it in our lives.

So how do we achieve order or restore it to our lives?

That’s a big question, one for another of these 31 days.
