Better Late…

..than never, right?

Are you one of those people who always arrives on time for your appointments? You get there 5 or 10 minutes early, arriving calm and collected.

Or are you the person that comes flying in 2 or 3 minutes (or more) late, out of breath and full of excuses as to why you are late?

You were slow getting ready. The car wouldn’t start. You had trouble finding the place. Traffic was bad. You lost track of time. And on and on.

Want to know the real reason that you were late? It isn’t any that you use as an excuse.

You’re addicted to the adrenaline rush. You know, that little jolt of electricity that turns an ordinary doctor’s appointment into something a little bit exciting.

Sure, it isn’t all that exciting, but it’s better than nothing.

Here’s the thing, though. Adrenaline rushes aren’t good for you. Too many “fight or flight” moments isn’t good for your body. It also encourages increasing behavior in order to get that rush.

Arriving on time may not be exciting, but it is more respectful to others and yourself.

Here are some ideas to help you get there with time to spare:

Make a habit of scanning the days ahead in your planner at least once a day. That way, nothing sneaks up on you.

Have a standard “go to” outfit ready – maybe even two – so that you already have an outfit picked out. Otherwise, pick something the night before and lay it out.

Make sure you know where you’re going ahead of time.

Estimate how long it will take you to get there and then add an extra 10-15 minutes to that time.

If you still find yourself running late, call ahead to let them know where you are and how late you think you will be.

Always carry something to pass the time with you. It could be a book, paper and pen, or even a game on your cell phone. That way if you do have to wait, you will not be bored.

Start making an effort to be early rather than late. It may not be as exciting, but there is something to be said for calm and peaceful as well.
