Clear the Clutter; Change Your Life

I’ve been reading a lot of blogs lately that talk about clearing out excess stuff – clutter.

The Nester over at The Nesting Place has been doing 31 Days to a Less Messy Nest all month and she has a lot of great ideas for clearing out and living with less, all the while keeping it beautiful.

April Dykman, guest posting over at Get Rich Slowly wrote a post about Giving Away, Not Selling, My Stuff.

She makes a really good point about how she cleared out her closets but then left the bags of stuff to get rid of (or sell in her case) in her closet, thereby defeating her purpose of clearing out.

As ADDers, I know that we have too much stuff.

There is the stuff that you bought to replace the stuff you can’t find.

And stuff you keep cause you might need it some day or the stuff that someone gave you that you feel bad getting rid of.

Did you know that clearing out your clutter can change your life?

I can hear you now – “Yeah, right”.

No really.

How much easier would it be to keep your house clean and orderly if you had less stuff?

I have an entire lower cupboard (that’s two doors, not one) full of plastic ware. You know, containers for leftovers. Seriously? I will never need them all, even on Thanksgiving.

And they cause a big mess every time I want to get one out or put one away. How much easier would it be if I narrowed it down to 5 or 6 containers?

I have a pile in my closet (much like April) of things I intend to give away. I think it’s been there in one form or another for years. I also have a good amount of hanging space devoted to clothes (like suits) that I no longer wear.

Someone else could use them, maybe for a job interview. Wouldn’t that be far better than letting them sit in my closet?

Just think about it: if you started clearing your clutter now, you might be ready for the holidays with a neat, clean home. It would be ready for company, entertaining, and all those gifts that are sure to show up.

I’m starting tomorrow with my bedroom closet.
