Fix It and Forget It

Fix it and forget it usually refers to a casserole or crock pot recipe, but not here.

People with Attention Deficit Disorder have a lot of trouble staying organized. We leave things out in the open, cause seeing them means we can’t lose them, but then we end up with so much stuff left out that we can’t see or find anything.

We know we need help, and deep down, we truly do crave organization, so we buy a book or go on a cleaning spree or even hire an organizer. And maybe we even do get organized, for a while.

Because here’s the thing that we don’t seem to get (and neither do some non ADD parents of ADD kids): you can’t fix it and forget it.

People with organized lives stay that way because to them it’s second nature. That’s why they’re organized in the first place. They’re maintaining their system, but you can’t tell because it’s always in order.

Those of us with ADD think of organization kind of like a tattoo: once you’ve got it, it’s there permanently. In truth, it’s more like your make-up, or your manicure, or your hair – it needs regular maintenance to keep it looking good.

That means putting stuff back when you’re done with it and cleaning up after yourself and never putting it off until “later”. If you do it as you go along, it’s not so bad at all. Pretty soon, you’ll be working your own system and making it look effortless. Really.
