Giving In

I had the weirdest day today. First I overslept. I was awakened by the phone. It was my daughter telling me she had forgotten her medication and needed it, so I jumped out of bed and hit the road.

That unexpected trip threw off my day and my schedule. I had to rush through making lunch, and then afterwards my husband put his dirty dishes in the dishwasher. Thoughtful, right? Except that I hadn’t taken the clean ones out yet.

Since I was behind with the dishes from this morning, the kitchen was in bad shape when I tried to clean up after lunch. I had water running in the sink and was distracted putting the food away.

When I turned back to the sink, the water was overflowing onto the counter and the floor.

After mopping up the mess, I just sat down for a minute trying to de-rattle myself. A short while later, when I tried to begin working, I just couldn’t.

My poor little ADD brain was behaving like a 2 year old throwing a tantrum. I couldn’t focus, couldn’t even remember what I’d started a few seconds ago.

Finally I gave up. I had to – there was nothing else to be done.

So I tried to relax a while. I had a cup of tea, did some journaling, and just generally accepted that today was not a day that I was going to accomplish anything.

I gave in to my brain and my symptoms and just let them have their way. Trying to force anything would have resulted in undue stress and frustration.

As it turns out, all I needed was that little break. After a few hours, things were good again and I was able to put some hours in on my business.

If you find yourself having a day like mine, and your brain has had enough, give in to it. Listen to what it’s telling you and take a break.

That’s part of that thing we don’t do so well – taking care of ourselves.
