Hunters, Farmers, and Med Free with ADD

The following is an excerpt from my Med Free with ADD program.

Thom Hartmann is the author of several books about ADHD, notably “ADD: A Different Perception”. He first became interested in the subject when his son was diagnosed.

He disliked telling his son that he had a “deficit” and a “disorder” because he knew that he was a bright, intelligent boy who was being made to feel inadequate because of this thing called ADHD, and he hated all the negative connotations associated with it.

It worried him a lot, and he spent a lot of time thinking about it, wondering how his son had ended up with ADHD in the first place.

One night, he had an idea that was later proven to be fact. He theorized that hundreds (thousands?) of years ago, there were 2 kinds of people: hunters and farmers.

Farmers
Dependable, reliable, steady
Stayed in one place
Planned ahead
Orderly, logical, methodical, able to focus on one thing at a time
Grew their food, planned ahead for the coming year
Cautious, prudent
Ate a “balanced” diet

Hunters
Impulsive, unpredictable
Wandered from place to place
Lived in the moment
Attended to many things at once, able to pay attention to many things at once
Hunted for food, traveled as the food source did, lived day to day
Risk taker
Ate a different kind of diet based on what was available

Needless to say, hunters are our ADHD ancestors. There’s nothing “deficit” or “disordered” about them. They were perfectly suited for their lifestyle, as farmers were for theirs.

Of course, the majority of our population today are farmers. They’re the list makers, the organized ones, the ones who keep things running smoothly.

Hunters stick out in today’s society because they’re different. They have trouble staying organized, being on time, or paying attention, but they’re also great at multi-tasking.

Hunters are also our dreamers and our visionaries. They’re the ones to dream about going to the moon, or diving deep beneath the ocean. They dream the dreams, and with the help of a farmer or two, they can make them happen.

Hunters and farmers of long ago ate a different diet and had a different lifestyle from one another; today’s ADDers and non-ADDers need to recognize this.

Modern day hunters are living a farmer’s lifestyle and wondering why they are seen as “deficit” and “disordered”. It’s because we are trying to be something we’re not: a farmer.

When you learn to feed, nourish and treat your hunter’s brain properly, you will find that your symptoms are lessened and easier to manage, and that you are functioning at your peak.

That is the idea behind the Med Free with ADD program.
