I Don’t Know How She Does It

“I Don’t Know How She Does It” is a movie with Sarah Jessica Parker about a working mom trying to balance work and family.

Reality, of course, is not so neat and tidy and resolved in an hour or two.

Real moms with small children have real struggles juggling it all, outside employment or not.

ADD Moms have an additional challenge added to the mix.

Keeping the house clean and orderly. Taking care of the family. Getting people where they need to be on time. Grocery shopping and food preparation.

All of that and more and doing it with ADHD.

Kind of like Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers. (You probably have no idea who they are. They were a famous dancing couple in the 30’s and 40’s. They made a ton of movies and everyone always talked about what a great dancer Fred Astaire was, until someone pointed out that Ginger Rogers was dancing too – backwards and in high heels.)

So anyway. We’ve established that being an ADD Mom is tough work. How do you do it all?

First, maybe you shouldn’t be doing it all. Surely there are other people in your household? The ones you’re caring for? Unless you have infants, everyone should be able to help. They can at least pick up after themselves. Learn to delegate.

Oh and while you’re at it, learn to give up a few things. Get rid of some of the stuff. It makes it easier to clean and looks better too. And maybe give up your perfectionist standards too. Making a half hearted attempt to clean is better than not cleaning at all.

Make sure that your kitchen and bathroom are clean because that’s related to health.

Focus on your own self care. You can’t take care of anything well if you don’t take care of yourself first.

Make sure your home is filled with love and laughter. Your family will benefit more from that than a spotless home.

Find ways to work around your ADHD symptoms. Hint: check out the organizing, time management and life skill categories on ADD Moms.

And be sure to find ways to educate your family about your ADHD. Make sure that know and understand that it’s real, and whether we like it or not, it can be a disability.

Do the best you can. And take care of you first.
