Making Crazy All by Yourself

Last Saturday was a crazy day for me. It ended with me being stressed out and needing a nap.

Basically what happened was that I decided that yes, I am Superwoman and I can do many, many things in just a few hours.

Forgetting an appointment time? Leaving late for it? Running low on gas? Not a problem. Rush here and there, get home around 4:30 and then try to make a slab of ribs for dinner? Of course. As long as you don’t mind having dinner around 9:00.

Why do we do these things to ourselves?

One reason is that we have a false sense of time. We see the afternoon stretching out before us and we decide that we have plenty of time to paint the garage, weed the garden, visit a friend and make a gourmet dinner too.

We don’t have a real sense of how long things take and we don’t take preparation time or travel time or running into a snag into account.

I didn’t prepare for my day last Saturday or I would have known that my appointment was at 12:30, not 2:00. I would have gotten up earlier so that I could shower, do makeup and hair, and find a nice outfit. (Me and my clothes were clean; forget hair, makeup and cute outfit.)

I didn’t prepare by checking the gas gauge or getting some cash from the bank ahead of time.

I said yes to an invitation I should have declined.

I had an errand to run – in the opposite direction – that I had put off the day before.

I had forgotten about the rack of ribs in the other fridge until it was cook them now or throw them out. I did cook them in the oven. We kind of snacked for dinner that night.

Now everybody has one of those days now and then, even if you don’t have ADHD. But when you start having too many of them, then it’s time to take a hard look at how you’re living your life.

How much are you trying to do each day? Is it reasonable?

How much have you got on your mind? When there’s too much going on in your life that you either have to take care of or just worry about, it affects how well you function on a daily basis.

Are you getting enough sleep?

Do you know how to say the word “no”?

Are you trying to do it all yourself? Why?

Take a good hard look at your life. What can you change to help make things easier?
