Setting Goals

Jump to:

Setting goals is the most effective way of achieving what you want in life.

We all know that, right?

So why do so many of us ADDers seem to flounder and drift through our days with not much to show for them?

For a long time, I thought that setting goals was a left brained activity meant for those with logical, orderly minds. You know those people – they do everything in the proper order, always know where things are and are never late.

In other words, not us.

But just because we are right brain oriented doesn’t mean that we don’t have the ability to set goals and reach them; we just need to go about it a different way.

The other day I joined SparkPeople in an effort to live a healthier lifestyle.

I also bought the book written by the founder of SparkPeople, “The Spark” by Chris Downie. Something that he wrote in the book really hit home with me.

I don’t have a direct quote, but the idea is that if you found yourself adrift in the ocean with nothing but blue water surrounding you, you would have no direction. You would drift aimlessly, not knowing which way to turn.

Your goal, of course, would be to save yourself, but without any direction, it would be almost impossible.

Now imagine being in that same ocean, except now you can see a lighthouse in the distance.

Now you have a much greater chance of achieving your goal – to save yourself – because you have a clear direction in which to go.

When you think of it that way, setting goals and reaching them seems much more attainable, doesn’t it?

Even for those of us with ADHD.

Stay tuned. I’ve got more I want to say.
