Start with Yourself

Jump to:

Something wrong? Something not working quite right? Things out of kilter?

Start by looking at yourself.

I learned this the hard way recently.

I’ve been having those days (weeks) when I can’t seem to get anything done. I’m lucky if I even move all day. You know those days right?

I was depressed and overwhelmed and almost comatose. Things needed to be done but they weren’t getting done.

And then the other day it hit me.

Remember my post on Order on the Outside and how it starts with order on the inside? Well somebody needs to tell me to listen to myself once in a while.

So yes, I do have this house filled with lumber at the moment. And no, I didn’t exactly lie to you when I said I was doing the best I can.

Because I am doing the best I can. It’s just that most days, that’s not very much.

And then the other day I took a look at myself.

Clean hair but pulled back in a ponytail. No makeup. Yoga shorts and an over sized Miller High Life t-shirt. Not very attractive. Not likely to make you feel good about yourself.

So I know I’ve been saying this forever, but I’m going to keep saying it until we all get it:

YOU’VE GOT TO TAKE CARE OF YOURSELF FIRST

Get it?

If you don’t feel good about yourself, if you don’t let yourself get enough sleep or feed yourself the right foods, how will you ever feel like doing things like mopping floors and scrubbing toilets? How can you give your best to your family if you’re not giving your best to yourself?

You can’t.

Are you listening?

Take care of you first.
