The Gift of ADHD

Jump to:

There have been some wonderful comments recently in response to my post Use Your Power for Good.

Linda said “It’s funny how having ADD/ADHD can make me think that I am flawed when in fact it is an attribute in many ways.”

And Carrie added that “Only when I learned that my ADHD was a gift…did I begin to fully realize what I was capable of!”

Marlo mentioned that “Our 9 y.o is inattentive type ADHD and we frequently remind him of his good qualities stemming from it and how he can harness those things viewed by some as ‘pesky quirks’ into something really great.”

I love the responses I got from that post, and I completely agree with every one of them!

ADHD is a gift, if you’re willing to accept it.

Do you view yourself as flawed and imperfect? Guess what? So is everyone else on the planet. We’re called humans.

You can choose to see ADHD as a “deficit” and a “disorder”, but what it really is is a “difference”. Our minds work differently than those of people without Attention Deficit Disorder, and that’s a good thing.

We’re intelligent, and creative, and we see connections and have dreams no one else would think of. It’s people like us who have put men on the moon, cell phones in our hands, and internet access everywhere – just for a start. Who else but someone with Attention Deficit Disorder would dare to think that the world is round, not flat, and be willing to risk his life and that of others to find out? (In truth, I have no idea if Christopher Columbus had ADHD or not, but it sure sounds that way to me.)

Carrie said that “Only when I learned that my ADHD was a gift…did I begin to fully realize what I was capable of!”. Well put.

What would you be capable of if you thought of yourself as gifted rather than flawed?

  1. I love this post! Yes, having ADD shouldn’t be viewed as a mark of inferiority. And who wants only apples? We need some plums and grapefruits and papayas in life! It’s great that we’re not all the same.

  2. Thank you so much! I think your comparison was perfect – plums, grapefruits, and papayas are not inferior to apples, just different and equally wonderful!
