Who Are You?

Jump to:

Who are you? And what do you base your perceptions on?

Sure, you might be a wife or girlfriend, a mom (or an ADD Mom), a daughter, a sister…the list could go on and on. (Feel free to substitute male terms if it applies).

But those things are mostly facts. Who are you, really, deep down inside? Who are you when it comes to your Attention Deficit Disorder? Do you define yourself in terms of your ADHD?

You are a sum of your parts, and your parts are always changing.

What you eat, how you sleep, how you take care of yourself, and even your life experiences all combine to make you the unique person that you are. Some of those things are within your control, and others are not.

You did not have the opportunity to choose whether or not you would have ADHD.

But you can choose how to define what it means to you.

Do you have a deficit and a disorder? Do you struggle with ADHD symptoms? Are there things that you cannot do because you have ADHD?

Or do you choose to see your brain as simply one that is alternatively designed? Do you see challenges where others see struggles? And do you recognize that everyone has both strengths and weaknesses, and that it is more important to talk about what you can do than what you can’t?

I know you. I know that you are smart, and able, and creative. I know that no matter how hard something is, you rarely give up, but keep going.

If you have chosen to see yourself the way I see you – with the added bonus of a little ADHD – congratulations.

And if you don’t see what I do – why not?
