Lost in the Moment vs In the Moment

You know that lately I’ve been having trouble with my ADD symptoms. I’ve been forgetting things, and letting daily routines slide. I’ve been trying to figure out what was causing it, and I finally realized what was happening this morning.

I’m starting a new business aimed at professionals within the field of Attention Deficit Disorder. I’m so excited about it – it’s practically all I’ve been thinking about or doing since I first got the idea.

You know what that’s like – you find a new hobby or interest and suddenly you can think of nothing else. It consumes you. You can get lost in whatever it is for hours without realizing time has passed.

That’s one of the characterisitics of ADHD; it’s called hyperfocus. It makes ADD all that more difficult for people to understand. You can read more about it here.

Anyway, my excitement with this new project has caused a lot of different things to happen. I’m not sleeping as much or as well, because my mind is racing with new ideas.

I haven’t been eating properly or drinking my water because I’ve been too absorbed in what I’m doing.

My entire schedule has been thrown off because all I want to do is work.

Schedules, structure, and routines are the basic keys to our success. Without them, we go from this place to that, dabbling a little here and a little there without accomplishing a great deal.

Even though I’ve been spending tremendous amounts of time on my new project, it would have been better spent if I had stuck with my routines and schedules. Ignoring my daily plan and routines caused me to neglect some things that are vital to me. My ADD symptoms got worse and my focus went out the window.

Yes, I was focused entirely on my project, but not really focused. I knew I wanted to work on it, but what to do first? Without focus and a plan, my time has not been as productive as it could have been.

If you find yourself in a similar situation, you need to start looking at your life and what’s changed. What are you neglecting?

And if you feel as though you’ve never had control of your symptoms at all, start examining your lifestyle. The simple things that we either do or don’t do to take care of ourselves can make a difference.
