31 Day Challenge: Day 23

When you are trying to establish some order in your life, one of the things that you have to do is to change your ways.

My hero, Albert Einstein, once said that the definition of insanity was doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results.

How often do you do that?

I think we all do.

My husband got a new case for his phone today. He must have spent 15 minutes trying to get it open, doing the same thing over and over. He finally decided to return it. 😉

I picked it up, looked at it, and tried a different way. It didn’t work the first time, but it did work. And just so you know, I kept trying my way over and over because I could see some progress in opening it; I just couldn’t get it all the open at first.

So when you’re trying for the 100th time to try and organize your closet or your purse or even your car, are you doing the same thing over and over?

I once knew someone whose idea of organizing was making the messy piles neat. You take everything out of the overstuffed garage, sweep the floor, and then put it all back, neatly.

It doesn’t work that way.

In order for you to make positive changes to your life, you have to change the way you think and the way you do things.

And you have to find a way that works for you.

And finally, here is a tip from me: I’ve often mentioned putting like things together in containers. It keeps them corralled and together.

The kind of container you choose, though, can make a big difference.

For things like pantries or the fridge, use clear containers so that you can see what’s there.

For drawers, you can use any sort of container because you are typically looking down into the drawer, not really seeing the container so much at all.

But it is possible to organize with containers right out in the open, on a bookshelf or under a table.

For those areas, use a decorative container that complements the room, and consider using one with a lid.

In my living room, for instance, I have a lined basket under one of the end tables that holds books. And in the family room, we have always and forever stored our movies (even back when they were tapes!) in an old picnic basket I have that has a lid. It’s big and roomy and it’s easy to lift the lid to get something out.
