Clearing Clutter

Jump to:

We are almost at the end of the year. For many of us, December is holiday time, and that often means exchanging gifts.

Exchanging gifts or receiving gifts from others means that we have more stuff. Have you ever tried to put away the toys on Christmas day or even on your child’s birthday and wonder where you’re going to put them? Do presents stay under your tree for days until you find a place for them?

Let’s take care of that problem now rather than later.

Those of us with ADHD can be easily overwhelmed in the best of circumstances; holidays make it worse because there’s so much more to do.

So let’s resolve now that little by little over the next 4 weeks, we’ll begin to clear the clutter in our homes.

Now this is not going to be overwhelming unless you let it. Just commit to 15 minutes a day. Start with the place that’s most cluttered, or that you have the most of. Maybe it’s the kids toybox or your closet – whatever. Don’t take too much time thinking about it – just do it.

Take 15 minutes and go through a closet or a drawer. Pull out anything that you’re not using or wearing. If you can, sort things as you pull them. Is this still wearable or usable? Put it in the giveaway pile. If not, put it in the garbage pile. Don’t think – just act.

Take the things that you’re going to give away and put them in a bag. I use garbage bags (clean ones of course). If you’re feeling super organized, write down what you put in. Ladies shirt is good enough – you don’t need to note more than that. You can use this list for tax purposes.

When your 15 minutes is up (did I remember to tell you to set a timer?), everything should be in a bag. Take the trash to the trash can and put the giveaway bag in your car. Next time you drive by a donation spot, you can drop it off.

You can get a lot done in 15 minutes a day if you stick with it. When the holidays get here, you’ll have room for your new items, plus you can scratch one thing off of your New Years Resolution list.

That’s a win-win!
