Let’s Bring Back Cleaning Day!

As ADD Moms, one of our biggest challenges and frustrations is keeping the house clean. Ideally, it’s an ongoing job, doing a little each day to keep things running smoothly.

For us, what usually happens instead is that at some point we can’t stand it anymore and we do a major full house cleaning.

Then because the house is clean, somehow we think it’s OK to ignore it for a few weeks.

This is not the way. You know that, right?

When my mom and my mother-in-law were raising their families, they had a designated cleaning day each week. They kept up on daily stuff, but the cleaning day was for the bigger things.

And just so you know – my mom had ADHD and just one child, my mother-in-law did not have ADD (that was my father-in-law) but she had 6 kids. Each had her own set of challenges. 🙂

Saturday was my mom’s cleaning day. Well, specifically, Saturday morning. I think she did that because I was home and could help. She kept the dishes done all week and wiped out the bathroom sink, but on Saturdays we did things like vacuum, dust, mop floors and really clean the bathroom.

My mother-in-law designated Monday as her cleaning day. After a weekend full of family, Monday – when everyone was gone – was a good day to get things back in order.

You know, we ADD Moms take things more casually. We wait til we feel like cleaning (really?) or until we can’t stand it anymore.

We might do better to take a lesson from our moms and grandmas and bring back cleaning day.
