Setting Goals

It’s almost the end of the year; have you been thinking about setting some goals or New Year’s resolutions? Seems like everybody thinks about those things when a new year begins.

I’ll bet a lot of your goals for 2010 are the same ones you set for 2009. I know mine are.

Let’s see if I can guess:

You want to –

lose weight
be more organized
be better prepared for the holidays next year (OK maybe not a resolution, but you’ve been thinking it)
clean the house and keep it that way
manage your time more effectively

How did I do?

One of the problems with goals like these is that they are too vague and maybe too ambitious. As ADDers , we are awfully good at setting goals that are too high and setting way too many of them.

Instead of resolving to lose weight, how about deciding to keep track of what you eat for a few weeks? Or deciding to learn more about what foods you should be eating and how much? Or replacing Pepsi with water?

Resolving to get organized is too vague too. Where do you want to get organized? Everywhere is not a good answer.

How about you resolve to find one significant place to get organized – like your checkbook or your purse or your closet – and then look for a system that might work for you? Then your next goal would be to put the system in place followed by maintaining it weekly.

Do you see the difference?

If you don’t, that’s OK. This is a subject I will be revisiting soon, cause it’s important to me, too.
