Last weekend, a couple of friends and I got together to craft, watch some Halloween movies, and have a cocktail or two.

I don’t know how the conversation started, but we started talking about skin care and make up. I know – three women talking about girly stuff like that – who would have guessed?

Anyway, my one friend said that she never washes her face or moisturizes it. I’m assuming her face gets wet in the shower, but I have to say I was shocked by her admission.

Do you take care of your face and wear makeup?

I admit I don’t always have makeup on, but I do try to take care of my skin.

My mom’s older sister owned a beauty salon back in the day and she stressed the importance of good skin care to her sisters. When my Aunt Alice passed away, she was 90 years old and had beautiful skin. And she lived most of her life in Florida, with all of that sun!

(P.S. – her secret was Ponds Cold Cream).

Needless to say, my mom passed on the same lessons to me.

Now I know that there are all sorts of skin care options out there, from drug store to high end stores. It can get really confusing!

And I do really want to talk about getting out of the door in the morning looking nice without spending a lot of time doing it, but let’s face it: all the makeup in the world won’t help poorly cared for skin. (Pun was not intended, but it worked ;)).

Here are the basics:

  • Rinse your face with water in the morning, wash it at night with a gentle cleanser. Remove makeup first. I use those towelettes.
  • Moisturize as needed. Moisture and oil are two separate things; just because you have oily skin doesn’t mean you couldn’t use a lightweight, water based moisturizer.
  • Eye cream. Moisturizer on the eyes will make the skin look puffy. Apply from the outside corner in. And while I’m at it: stop rubbing your eyes! If you must, go from the outside in, not the other way. Unless of course you want wrinkles.
  • Sunscreen. Even in the winter. Get a moisturizer that already has it and you’re good.
  • Exfoliate now and then. A little salt or sugar mixed in with your cleanser is cheap and easy. It brightens your skin, boosts collagen production, and keeps you looking younger.

Now to the makeup. Sorry guys.

As ADD women, we can often have trouble getting out the door on time. And if we have to herd others as well as ourselves, well, that just makes things much worse.

As women, we put ourselves last.

And as ADD women, we tend to have low self esteem.

So when you’re putting yourself last and not taking time for a little self care, like putting on some makeup, what is that going to do to your self esteem and your image in general?

When people see someone who obviously doesn’t take care of herself, they assume that she has low self esteem and does not respect herself.

So do you think they are going to respect you? I doubt it.

Makeup doesn’t have to be time consuming. I’m not asking you to do a RuPaul here.

RuPaul

Base your choices on what you prefer to wear, but here are mine:

  • Concealer under my eyes cause I have dark circles. If you don’t, skip it.
  • Blush
  • Highlighting powder. I use this instead of a bronzer because I don’t like bronzers and the highlighting powder makes my skin look a little brighter.
  • Eyebrow color cause otherwise it looks like I have none.

I don’t like the feel of foundation, so I don’t wear it. I’m lucky to have nice skin. Thanks Aunt Alice and mom!

If I choose to add more:

  • A very light bone colored or off white eye shadow in the corners of my eyes where the tear ducts are, under my brow bone, and on my eyelid in the center near the lashes. This makes you look more awake and rested. No glitter or shimmer please!
  • Mascara
  • Sometimes, an eye pencil to line my upper lids.

I can have my simple face done in less than 5 minutes and if I choose to do it all, maybe 10.

Come on ladies. Take a little pride in your appearance. It doesn’t take much!

Oh, and if you’re like me and have a bunch of makeup, separate it from your daily stuff. Another time saver!
