The ADD Mom

I think that moms who have ADHD are in a more challenging place than other adults with ADHD.

If you’re a mom, you know how challenging the job can be. Keeping track of people and their things, planning meals, doing laundry, getting everyone where they need to be on time, paying bills and managing finances – the list is almost endless.

If you have ADHD, keeping track of yourself and all you have to do is hard enough; add in a family and things can quickly spiral out of control. I know. I once invited 10 people over for Christmas dinner and realized at midnight on Christmas eve that I had forgotten to go grocery shopping. We didn’t even have bread and milk, much less Christmas dinner.

That’s why I always tell moms who have ADHD to take care of themselves first, especially when it comes to their ADHD. Most of us women aren’t so good at taking care of ourselves after we become moms, but in this case, you’re really doing your family a service by taking care of you first.

Another friend, Cara Mirabella, who owns The Household Helper, has a lot of good information on her site, too. My favorite is her article on One Minute Chores.

You know, those of us with ADHD have trouble with time, especially estimating how long something will take – all the more true when it’s something we dislike, like cleaning. (I used to dread changing the sheets until I realized it took all of 6 minutes to do.)

With Cara’s one minute chores, imagine how much better your house will look! Everyone has a spare minute here and there, and don’t forget to multi-task like Cara does – do a one minute chore or two when you’re on the phone.

I don’t know if Cara or Sarah has ADHD – I have no reason to think that they do – but they have both been in the place that many of us have (or are still in). We can learn from these ladies and make our lives and that of our families better.
