Why You Need Another Brain

Jump to:

No, this post isn’t a comment on how poorly your brain functions or how dumb you are. Actually, I think you’re highly intelligent and your brain functions pretty well.

The other brain I’m talking about is an electronic one.

Yesterday, I told you how your brain is like a microwave. It’s capable of far more than you use it for, but you never get there because you’re too preoccupied with remembering appointments and to dos and trying to get out the door on time.

That’s where your second brain comes in.

An electronic organizer can make your life so much easier if you will just put it to use.

And no, a paper planner is not a good substitute.

Electronics can beep at you and remind you of things. A paper planner only works if you look at it at the right time – that is, before you’re supposed to show up at school with 12 dozen cupcakes.

There are a lot of options available to you – everything from your cell phone to your laptop to an iPhone or Blackberry. Choose something that works for you.

If you can find something that offers extra options, like apps on the iPod or Blackberry, it might increase your chances of actually using it.

I use an iPod Touch and I couldn’t live without it. Here are some of the things I use it for:

Anything that goes on a calendar – the iPod syncs with my Google calendar, too. Now if it could just sync with my daughter’s Blackberry.

Contact information – names, addresses, phone numbers, email, etc

Shopping lists – not just grocery shopping – I keep a running list of things I need for the house in case I spot a great deal

Measurements – window sizes, people sizes, the square footage of our garden

Notes – things like confirmation numbers for bills paid online or things ordered. Also where I put things. For instance, when we pay our home owners association dues on time, we get a gift certificate for dinner at the clubhouse. We like to go in the summer so we can sit on the patio in front of the lake, so I make a note for where I put the certificate so I can find it a few months later.

I have games, books, the internet, Facebook, Twitter and more on my iPod. As I said, I use it all the time.

When you find something that you will use and love as much as I do my iPod, you can finally start using that amazing brain of yours for something more than reheating cups of tea and burritos.
