What Motivates You?

I think that one of the biggest problems that people with ADHD face is finding motivation to do the things that need to be done.

There are so many things in our lives that have to be taken care of on a regular basis and yet we struggle to get them done. If you’ve ever been Christmas shopping on Christmas Eve, maybe you know what I mean.

And seriously, where do you find the motivation to scrub a toilet?

But the fact is that the toilet still needs to be cleaned.

So where do you find the motivation to do the things that you don’t want to do but should do?

ADHD people are big on adrenaline rushes, excitement and shiny new things. That’s why they push things to the last minute. Gotta build in your excitement wherever you can.

Along those lines, some suggest inviting people over to your house in order to motivate you to really clean it. But that’s a bit extreme, don’t you think?

Surely we can find other ways to motivate ourselves to do what needs to be done.

I guess the first thing is to put on our big girl panties and realize that we just have to do it, like it or not. Then maybe we can work on ways to make the task either more enjoyable or at least faster.

Keeping a clean house, for instance. A clean house is easier to clean than a dirty one. And a clutter free house is easier to clean than one with too much stuff in it.

So don’t wait for the toilet to get gross before you clean it. Swish the brush everyday and use one of those disinfectant wipes to clean it off each day. That way, it’s always in pretty good condition, you’re not taking a lot of time to clean it, and the ick factor goes way down.

I don’t know about you, but I love good scents. Scented candles, tarts in the tart burner – I just love for my house to smell good.

I take that idea with me when it comes to cleaning. I buy products that smell good to me so I actually enjoy using them. Check them out – there are a lot of good smelling alternatives out there.

I think that any way that you can appeal to your senses in a positive manner helps motivate you. Think about a shiny clean surface or freshly polished wood. How about the way your kitchen floor feels on bare feet when it’s freshly mopped? Or climbing into a bed with clean, fresh sheets?
