You Need a Backup Plan

As ADD Moms, we are in charge of a lot. And as ADD Moms, sometimes it’s easy for us to forget something or just lose track of things.

That’s why it’s especially important for us to have backup plans in place for the most critical areas of our lives.

Flylady, for instance, recommends always keeping an extra $20 bill on you, whether you hide it in your wallet or put it in the glove compartment of your car. No worries about not having money if you run out of gas.

Maybe that’s a good habit for you to get into, or maybe running out of gas isn’t an issue for you.

Take a look at what is an issue for you and see if you can find ways to put a back up plan in place.

For instance, getting the laundry done each week was always a huge chore for me. You don’t want to get to the end of the week and find out that there are no clean towels, or underwear, or clothes.

So here are a couple of backup ideas for you:

1. Pick out a complete outfit for each person in your household and wash them all together. If there’s room, add 1 set of towels per person as well. When it’s dry, store it somewhere out of the way. This is your end of the week stash when nothing else is clean.

2. Don’t just do a random load of laundry. Pick out a week’s worth of outfits for each member of the family (obviously they can help with this) and do enough loads so that this much is clean. You’ll be washing underwear and socks with the clothes and then doing another load with enough towels for the week. Make this a habit and you’ll never have to worry about having clean clothes again.

Running out of food before the week’s over? Pantry Meals can solve the dinner problem. Then make a stash box (and hide it) with some non perishable snacks and lunch treats. You could even throw a couple of fives or ones in there so whoever needs to can buy lunch if nothing is available.

Remembering appointments and commitments is another problem area for ADD Moms. A planner is a definite must, but sometimes you need a backup. I use my iPod Touch as my planner and my cell phone as a backup. I can set alarms on both – one of the main reasons that I use them.

You can also find online services that will help you remember what you need to do. There are a lot of them out there; do a search and see what works for you.

One of the big keys to managing your ADHD symptoms is to identify your weak areas and find ways to overcome them. A backup plan is a good way to start.
