ADHD and Procrastination

Jump to:

My birthday is this week, and that means that I need to renew my drivers license. I’ve been putting it off for way too long (I don’t want to say how long in case any law enforcement types are reading. Oh, it isn’t expired, just from another state.)

I had my reasons for putting it off, but really, they were more excuses than really valid reasons.

I think that procrastination is an integral part of Attention Deficit Disorder. We always think there’s time later for whatever we need to do. Or we get distracted by something more interesting and appealing than going to the BMV.

Then comes the time when it has to be done. Has to. We have literally minutes to get it done before it’s too late. (Or in my case, a couple of days.)

And you know what that whole rushing around in a last minute hurry thing does? It kicks in the adrenaline rush, something people with ADD seem to like a lot. Come on, how many times have you told someone you work better under pressure?

That may or may not be true; you likely just don’t know because you’ve never done anything ahead of time, in a leisurely manner.

And now, if you’ll excuse me, I have a drivers license test to study for.
