Did you know that your eating habits could be influenced by your ADHD?
And that it can be harder to lose weight if you have ADHD?
Not only that, but binge eating, bulimia, and obesity are more common among women with ADHD.
Pretty depressing, right?
There are a number of reasons why these things are true:
- We don’t pay attention. A lack of attention isn’t just when we’re supposed to be listening to something or doing something important; we often don’t pay attention when we eat. As a result, we overeat.
- We have low self esteem and a predisposition to addictive behavior. Food can become our drug of choice.
- We are easily bored and often turn to snacks for relief.
- The same is true when we are anxious or depressed.
- We are not good at regulating our behavior which could lead to binge eating.
- Along with a lack of attention, we have trouble being aware of our bodies. We often overeat without realizing we are full, or wait far too long to eat because we didn’t notice that we were hungry, which could lead to eating too much.
There is very little research done on the subject of eating disorders and ADHD, especially as it relates to women.
But I have some good news.
While it is not specific to women, the University of Birmingham in England is doing a study on eating behaviors.
They are looking for participants between the ages of 18 – 60, with or without ADHD.
You simply take a survey – they say it takes about 40 minutes – and you can be entered to win an Amazon gift card worth 50 pounds; about $75 in U.S. currency.
