Do As I Say

Sometimes I should listen to my own advice. Many times, I’ve advised you to learn to stay in the moment, to focus on what’s happening right now rather than thinking about future events. Just last week, I talked about ADD minimums and learning what you need in order to function at your baseline level.

Ironically, shortly after that particular post, I got a call from our local hosptial saying that our daughter was in the ER. She spent several days in ICU after that. Everything since then has been a blur. (She’s home now, and OK, although she will need further treatment.)

Obviously, this was a situation that was out of my control. There was no way to get any sleep for a while, or a decent meal. Nor were those things even on my radar. It’s understandable that my ADD symptoms would be out of control.

The thing is, it wasn’t until today that I realized it. I had been making decisions and trying to do all the things I do every day without realizing that I wasn’t thinking as clearly or functioning as well as I normally do.

I guess that part of that goes along with being a mom; you still try to put meals on the table and keep the house clean even in the midst of a crisis. On some level, I knew that I was tired and fuzzy headed, but it just didn’t register with me that these things meant that I should step back a little and either put some things on hold or hand them off to someone else.

Thankfully, no permanent damage was done. What has been done can be un-done or fixed. People have been very understanding.

I wanted to tell you this because some of you may have been in contact with me in the last week and wondered at my lack of response or perhaps my not quite making any sense response. I also wanted to share this with you in case you find yourself in a similar situation sometime. Remember me, and then do what I say, not what I do.
