ADHD is sort of like Justin Bieber. It never travels alone; it always has an entourage.
Many times, one of the hangers on is depression.
Depression and ADHD seem to pair well with one another. When you live with ADHD, it’s not so easy to feel good about yourself. In fact, it’s easier to feel bad about your shortcomings and mistakes. Depression has an easy way in.
Now I am a firm believer in natural treatments and things that do little or no harm to your body and health, but depression is not something to take lightly. Untreated depression can have dire consequences, including suicide.
You definitely want to see your doctor if you think you are suffering from depression.
One of the positive things, though, that you can do to help your depression is to add Vitamin D complex to your diet. The FDA (Food and Drug Administration) recommends 1000 IUs per day.
Studies have shown that most Americans are deficient in Vitamin D. This is especially true if you live in the northern half of the country.
According to Psychology Todaya Vitamin D deficiency can result in depression and depression like symptoms. They cite several studies that corroborate this.
Vitamin D is also called “The Sunshine Vitamin” because it helps with Seasonal Affective Disorder or SAD. The symptoms of SAD are similar to depression, but usually occur during the winter months when there is little sun and people tend to stay indoors.
So, now that I’ve sold you on the benefits of taking Vitamin D, I want to tell you how you can boost it’s good effects.
Vitamin D is fat soluble and therefore most effective when taken with your largest meal of the day, since that’s likely to also be the one with the most fat. And by the way, consuming that largest meal at lunch instead of dinner is better for your waistline, especially if the fat is from healthy sources like olive oil and nuts.
If all of this is too much to keep up with, here’s the bottom line: Vitamin D is good for you and your depression. If you have trouble remembering amounts and when to take it, just find a good multi-vitamin and take it in the morning.
Any effort is better than none at all.
