Paying Attention to You

Jump to:

I haven’t posted here in a while. First my laptop died, and then I got a really bad chest cold that just knocked the stuffing out of me.

There is a saying that you may have heard – something about how the Universe gently nudges you in the right direction, but if you don’t listen, the voice gets louder and louder.

I think this past week or so was the Universe yelling at me because I haven’t been listening.

There is a lot going on in my life right now, mostly health things, and nothing serious. My body has been trying to tell me to slow down and take better care of myself; to pay attention to me. But I haven’t been listening.

Like a lot of moms, ADD or not, I put myself last. That’s how I was raised – you consider others before yourself.

Can you appreciate the way things worked out?

Catching a bad chest cold would knock me down but not out. I would push myself to keep going, to update my site, to answer emails, to Facebook, to help where I could.

Ahhhh, but what happens if I have no computer? Hmmm….. can you say enforced rest?

OK, enforced rest is probably not the best description, but I’m running on DayQuil here, so give me a break, OK?

The truth is, as I sat around and rested, took naps, I had some time to think. And I realized that had I been able to work the past week, anything I would have produced would have been pretty worthless.

Did you know that ADHD symptoms get worse when you’re sick? Well, they did with me, anyway. And that makes sense.

We know that ADHD symptoms are made worse by lack of sleep and poor nutrition. When you’re sick, you may or may not be getting more rest – I got about a whopping 4 hours a night – and you probably won’t want to eat.

When your body is sick, it needs you to help it get better, and you do that by paying attention. Pay attention to you: what is your body telling you?

Are you listening?
