Stop Focusing on the Deficit

Jump to:

When we think and talk about ADHD, we tend to focus on the deficit, and then we wonder why we have poor self esteem.

You know that I’m always talking about saying good things about yourself and to yourself. And I remind you how the primitive part of your brain believes everything you tell it and then reacts accordingly.

So why are we concentrating on the negative stuff?

Well, that’s what we talk about because that is what we struggle with and try to resolve.

But always focusing on the struggle paints a very negative view of our life. You know what they say…

When you focus on what you can’t do or struggle with, instead of reminding yourself of your strengths, you bring more negativity into your life. We have more than enough of that already, don’t we?

Does that mean that we should turn into Pollyannas, always looking to the bright side and ignoring our very real needs?

Of course not.

We do struggle at times. We forget. We lose things. We interrupt and sometimes say the wrong thing. And we need help in learning to manage those things.

But in learning to manage them, let’s remember to also celebrate our positive traits and to look back at our journey and see how far we have come.
