Connecting Your Brain to Your Body

Ummm….isn’t your brain already connected to your body?

Well yes.

And no.

What I mean is that it could be better connected than it is. Your body and your brain could work together more and more easily. It probably wouldn’t stop you from walking into walls, but it can help you remember things better.

So how do we do this?

Easy.

You know those senses you have?

No, not the ones like weird Aunt Miriam.

Senses like hearing and smelling and touching. Those senses.

Turns out, the more you involve them while you are doing something that you need to remember, the more easily you will remember.

Let’s say that you’re still in school and you’re studying for a test. You’re reading over your notes, trying to get everything into your head.

Here’s a better way.

Start by re-writing your most important notes or turning them into flash cards.

Reading them involves one sense – sight – but reading them and writing them involves two – you see the words and then you write them. I don’t know if that’s the sense of touch or the act of kinesthetic movement, but I do know that it works.

Now, if you read your notes, write them in the form of flash cards, and say what you are reading and writing out loud, you’ve got even more senses involved. Now you have added the sense of hearing.

Believe it or not, you can even add in the senses of taste and smell.

When I worked in the Learning Assistance Center at a two year college, we always had peppermints on the counter for test days. Peppermint makes you more alert, plus if you have a peppermint or two while you are reading and writing and hearing, it makes the memory of what you’re doing even stronger.

As for smell, you may get some from the peppermint. If not, find a smell that is easy to transport, like a small perfume stick or essential oil. Use this scent just for memories. Use it while you study and again when you take the test.

Now, what if you’re not in school anymore?

Are you telling me you don’t have things you need to remember???

How about putting this plan to use when you do your Sunday night plan?

Of course, you don’t need to make flash cards or get tested on it, but going over next week’s schedule out loud, making some notes in your daily calendar or to do list, and having some peppermint tea might make the week a little bit easier to get through.

There are lots of ways you could put this idea to use. And if you dance while you do it, well, there’s no telling what will happen.
