Do You Matter?


That’s a serious question.

After Robin Williams’s death earlier this week, there has a been a lot of talk about depression, suicide, and mental health in general.

Those of us who suffer from depression know how hard it can be to escape.

Judging from the reactions, Robin Williams touched thousands of lives and mattered to many people, including his friends and family. Do you think that he knew that? And if he did, why didn’t that affect his decision?

We’ll never know the answers to those questions. They really aren’t any of our business to know.

But what about you? Do you really matter?

I’m sure you do; to more people than you realize.

Did you know that as women with ADHD we are three to four times more likely to attempt suicide? And that we are two to three times more likely to self injure?

I talk a lot about self care on this blog, about saying positive things to and about yourself. You might brush it off as silly and ineffective, but you would be wrong.

If you are at the point where you are contemplating harming yourself, all of the positive self talk in the world won’t matter. Seek help immediately.

  1. Sadly, when one is in deep depression they are unable to feel love. They become detached and even though they are loved, they are not able to share those emotions. They isolate themselves, and this isolation only adds to their pain. Reach out early. As one becomes more depressed it gets even harder to reach out.
