ADHD and Your Environment

Jump to:

I think that most of us are aware that kids with ADHD are more successful in school when they have a structured and organized environment.

But did you know that the same is true for adults with ADHD?

You’ve all heard me complaining for months about my downstairs bathroom. (Status: ceiling in & painted, walls have been taped off for weeks awaiting paint.)

I realized today that part of what has made me feel so overwhelmed and unproductive is the state of that bathroom.

It’s the one we use most often and the one that guests use. It’s been six months and it’s wearing on me.

The state of that bathroom in many ways sums up the state of my life right now.

Like many ADDers, I’ve got too many projects going at once (cause you get tired of one and then something else distracts you). You know how it is, I’m sure.

But when you’re surrounded by so much unfinished business, it starts to affect you.

It’s easy to feel overwhelmed – anybody would, with so much chaos around them.

The problem then becomes one of inaction. You’re so overwhelmed by all that needs to be done that you freeze, not knowing where to begin.

The answer is simple: just begin.

Easier said than done, I know. But it’s absolutely vital that you do. Not to take action only makes matters worse. You start to dink deeper and deeper into that pit of depression and immobility.

If you’re like me – surrounded by too much to do and no motivation to do it – let’s begin today to take action.

Find one little area and do what needs to be done. For me, I bought a pack of paint brushes yesterday and I will conquer that bathroom once and for all.

  1. Thank you, Brenda, that’s what I needed – that someone sais: just do something, just start somewhere.
