Eliminating Distractions

Jump to:

When you have ADHD, it’s easy to get distracted. In fact, it’s sort of required – or else maybe it wouldn’t be ADHD. 😀

But just because being easily distracted is part of ADHD doesn’t mean that you can’t do something about it.

One of the things that you can do about it is to eliminate as many distractions as you can.

Now this might seem obvious to you under certain circumstances. For instance, if you had to do something important that required focus and concentration, you would eliminate a lot of distractions. Turn off the TV, put your cell phone on vibrate, close your email program, find a quiet place, etc.

But you can do the same sort of thing in your everyday life and make things easier on yourself.

You don’t have to live without TV or your cell phone; instead look for other, less obvious distractions.

Is there a cluttered part of the house that bothers you every time you look at it? Think how much better you would feel if you cleared it out.

Is getting dressed in the morning a hassle because your closet is a mess? Now imagine a clean and orderly closet and how it would feel to get dressed in there.

And while we’re talking about clothing, how do you feel about what you wear each day? Do you feel good about how you look each and every day? Or are the same old ratty tees and sweatshirts making you feel dumpy?

How about tossing those old things and only keeping what makes you feel good? A nice pair of jeans that fit and a cute little shirt can be just as comfortable as what you’re wearing but make you feel way better.

Think about small and seemingly insignificant things that might be distracting you. Do you have a missing button or a broken shoe lace or a burned out light bulb somewhere that irritates you? You put up with it, and even though it would only take a minute or two to fix, you just never do.

Start looking around. What’s distracting you? What are you putting up with that you don’t have to?

Make a list and then start eliminating some of those distractions.

You’ll be surprised at how such small changes can have such a big impact on how you feel.
