Are You Getting in Your Own Way?

Jump to:

What areas in your life are you having trouble with?

Right now a lot of my areas center around my desk and my computer.

The account I keep meaning to cancel. The stuff I keep meaning to check on. Writing my blogs and my newsletter.

I was thinking about all of that today and why I was suddenly so behind in that area and I finally realized that it was my desk.

Next to my desk is the container that stores gift wrapping supplies. You know – like Christmas gifts? On top of it is a blank journal someone gave me, a package of printer paper, and some toilet paper. (We have a 3 month old puppy; she gets into stuff. Apparently recently it was toilet paper.)

There are stacks of papers and electronics on my desk, including the binoculars my son left there because he was looking out my window at a hawk perched in a tree.

I have books and notebooks all around and there are some days when I even have stuff on my chair.

How do I possibly expect to get any work done in that environment?

What about you? Where is your trouble zone?

Having trouble keeping the kitchen clean? What do your counters and tables look like? And what about the inside of the fridge?

Having trouble keeping up with the laundry? Take a look at the state of your laundry room and maybe your closets too.

Those of us with ADHD are really good at getting in our own way.

Now you have a tool to help you see where the trouble is. You just have to remember to use it.

  1. why do i have anxiety reading that article. you nailed it girl! the difficult thing for me is i get all geared up to work on a certain area, i do well for a while (a week or two) then i drop the ball. i say to myself, ” ok, i did it for a week i can do it forever… right?” i wish it was that easy. the one thing i have learned is to be compassionate with myself. don’t compare myself to others, (for one thing, when we do that we usually compare our worst self to others best self… not fair!!) i take 15 min a day to d-clutter, thats it!!! when the timer is done, i’m done!!! i can totally do that! …I’ve also learned to keep my life as simple as possible, i try not to over schedule myself or my children. It has also been very motivating to develope areas of perfection. for example, everyday i make my bed 🙂 did you know only a very small amout of people make their beds everyday? when i heard that i thought to myself, WOW>>>I AM THE EXCEPTION!!!! after mastering that it has motivated me to be perfected in other things, like right now i’m working on keeping my car clean. i am a work in progress. but the key word is progress. i know it’s a long slow process but i am moving forward, i am making progress:)

  2. Great ideas Shelley! I especially like the idea about areas of perfection. You’re right – we shouldn’t beat ourselves up but treat ourselves at least as well as we treat others. And you know, I never thought about it before, but you’re right – we do compare our worst behavior with other people’s best. Good point!
