Doing Two Things at Once

Jump to:

Many people claim that those of us with ADHD are great at multitasking. Then there are others who say that multitasking is not as effective as people think.

Here’s what I know: it’s hard to do more than one thing at a time and do both well. It’s not such a big deal if you’re talking on the phone and washing dishes, but for other things, it can be downright impossible.

I think that for those of us with ADHD, when it comes to the big things, we can manage one but not two or more and do it well.

If you work outside the home or have young children, it seems that’s where most of your energy and attention goes. I don’t think it’s possible to have a clean, well kept home and a job (or a clean home and kids).

OK, I know there are people who manage it. My neighbor Wendy is one. I’m not.

See, we just have so much attention. We all know how short and fleeting our attention can be. So when we have a number of things to manage and do, we try to focus as hard as we can. Hopefully the big important things get our attention and get done, and the smaller ones maybe not so much.

But it doesn’t always work that way. Sometimes we waste our time and attention on things like Facebook and then find ourselves at the end of the day with not much done. It happens.

This is an important topic and one that we all struggle with.

If you work outside the home and still manage that well kept house, please share and tell us how you do it.
