Take a Break

Jump to:

Did you know that your ADD brain can benefit from taking frequent breaks when you are doing something that requires a lot of brain power?

Maybe you’re studying for a real estate exam or balancing your checkbook, trying a new recipe or even working hard on getting a room clean.

Any time you’re working your brain hard or trying to figure something out, you need to remember to take a break now and then.

If it’s thinking kind of stuff – like doing your taxes – you need a break every 15 minutes or so. That’s especially true if you’re trying to retain information, like studying. Your brain needs the break in order to put information into long term storage.

And if you’re just working hard in general, you could still use a break every 15-20 minutes. If you’re dealing with a lot of stuff – like cleaning a room – your brain can get mentally exhausted and could use a break.

Now might be a good time to define just what a break is. 🙂

For the most part, a break lasts just a minute or two. You can go to the bathroom, or do some stretches, grab a quick snack and then go back to work.

If you’re really stressed out, a 10 minute break for a cup of tea or coffee is acceptable, but not each time you take a break. That’s called trying to get out of it. Kind of like when my kids used to put their dirty dishes in the sink to “soak” before they needed to go into the dishwasher. You know who ended up putting them in, right?

So anyway, remember the rule about breaks, but understand that it’s not written in stone. If you find yourself on a roll, getting a lot done, then go with it. When you’re done you can take a longer, well deserved break.
