Mindfulness and ADD

Today I had one of those days. Errands I thought would take an hour or so took more than two. The ham I planned for dinner is now tomorrow night’s dinner because it took far longer to cook than I expected.

And to top it all off, I had a truly ADD moment.

Our insurance company requires us to get our prescriptions by mail. This was my first time doing this, so I tried to cover all my bases.

I called the insurance company to make sure of the procedure. I filled out several pages of forms very carefully. I wrote a check for the proper amount, was pleased to see I didn’t need a stamp and then put everything into the envelope.

I had to re-fold the forms so that they would fit, and I made sure that the address was showing through the window. I noticed that it was going to Cincinnati, which is where my dad and other relatives live.

I put the check in the envelope, taking care to place it inside the forms so that it wouldn’t fall out as soon as the envelope was opened.

Then I drove to the mail box and stopped by the grocery store for the potatoes I had forgotten and intended to serve with the ham.

It was when I got home and was unloading my groceries that I saw my prescriptions still laying on the counter. 🙁

Now tomorrow I’ll have to call the insurance company, explain what I did, and make another trip to the mailbox, this time using my own stamp.

You know where I went wrong? It’s been a busy and mildly frustrating day. Too many errands, too many demands from others. My mind was focused everywhere but on what I was doing right that moment.

I was so proud of myself for being so careful and covering every base, when in reality, my mind was several hundred miles away – in Cincinnati.

Sometimes you can learn from what I say and sometimes you can learn from what I do.
