Money and ADHD

I’ve been thinking a lot about money lately. The current economy in the United States has everyone thinking about money these days, regardless of where you live. At my house, my husband has been laid off, so we’re watching our budget even more closely than usual.

People with Attention Deficit Disorder struggle a lot with finances, or more specifically, managing them. (When I say finances I mean your checking account and your bills, not your stocks and investments.)

Paying the bills, money in and out of the account – never the same balance two days in a row. It’s a circular process that easily gets overwhelming and confusing.

You might know that you pay out $2000.00 a month in bills, and that you make $3500.00 a month, but that’s not enough information. $2000.00 a month in bills equals $500.00 per week that you have to set aside, but some weeks – like when you pay your house payment or rent – you need more in the bank.

And what if it’s the middle of the week – do you have enough? Will $500.00 this Friday added to what you have now give you enough to pay this week’s bills? Should there be extra for the following week?

And it isn’t just the math that’s the problem – it’s remembering which bills to pay when. If you have a system that helps you remember, that’s great. But does it get you all the way to the mailbox?

I’ve been known to carry a bill around in my purse, stamped and ready to mail, for days. So long, in fact, that it was late when it got there. All because I couldn’t remember to look for a mailbox when I was out.

The way things are these days, we need to make an extra big effort to manage our money as effectively as we can. In the end, we’ll not only save money (no more late fees) but our minds will be at rest, and that’s priceless.

You’ll never need to worry about money for your bills again. (Of course, if you’re spending more than you make, that’s another matter. But I’ll have ideas for you there, too.)

    Personally i prefer Post Its- they are my new best friend-LOL.

    I use post-its a lot too. They stop working, though, when you use too many:) Been there, done that.
