5 Tips for Organizing Your Spaces

Jump to:

Something about the new year makes me want to clean and organize!

(Not my house. 😉 Just a random photo. Hopefully there is an “after” for this “before”.)

Do you feel that way?

Maybe its the fresh start of the new year that makes us want to freshen everything. Maybe its just a response to the season.

At any rate, if you’re like me and in an organizing frame of mind, here are some tips to help you out:

1. Start small. Remember your ADHD mind will make elaborate plans that your poor self just can’t get done in the time allowed. Choose a closet instead of the whole room. If its a big closet – like my pantry – choose one shelf at a time.

2. Get rid of the trash first. We all accumulate things we don’t need or use. Now is the time to get rid of them. If they are still usable, put them in a bag or box for charity. And at the end of the day, take that bag or box right out to your car so you can drop it off next time you’re out. Leaving it in the house is asking for trouble!

3. Put like things together and store things that might used together in the same area. For instance, all of my baking flours are stored in a plastic bin in my pantry. Nearby I store oils, shortening and things like chocolate chips and yeast.

4. Use containers to corral things and keep them orderly. To make sure you make the most of your space, measure before you buy. You need an idea of how big of a container you need to hold the things you are storing together and then you need to know what you can fit on the shelf.

5. Get creative with storage. Sure, an entire pantry with matching containers and cute little scrapbooky labels might be amazing and adorable, but lets get real here. Are you organizing the space or decorating it? One thing at a time. Look around the house for containers you can use. Plastic tubs from margarine and cottage cheese make good containers for small things outside of the fridge. (Otherwise you’d never be able to find the cottage cheese container that actually has cottage cheese in it). Plastic storage containers that have lost their lids can be repurposed as storage bins. You get the idea.

Finally, for some true inspiration – and an hour or two of wasted time 😉 – check out Pinterest and search “storage”.
