It’s All About the Plan

Jump to:

Well we have survived Thanksgiving and are well on our way to Christmas or whatever holiday you might celebrate in December.

Did you cook the big meal or did someone else? Most of the women I know went somewhere else for Thanksgiving and had little, if anything, to do.

I got to make Thanksgiving dinner twice.

My daughter, her husband, and my grandson were here a couple of weeks ago and we had Thanksgiving then, as well as last week.

It’s a lot of work.

I personally have trouble remembering which dish I use for certain things, like the mashed potatoes. And just so we are clear – I am not Martha setting a grand dining table. It’s buffet style, sometimes right from the stove, with nary a place setting in sight.

You know what? We do these things every year. The holidays and birthdays come at the same time each year.

So how can we make things easier for us? How do we stop reinventing the wheel each time?

It’s all about the plan.

Maybe you know that every Halloween my neighbors and I get together to do an over the top thing for the kids. We’ve been doing it for years. Each year it gets bigger than before.

At some point, we decided that we needed a list of things to remember (or as my friend with ADHD puts it, “write this down so we don’t remember”).

We are up to a scrapbook and several pages of notes, but it works. Each Halloween, we get those things out. The scrapbook tells us what we’ve done in the past, in case we want to do it again, and our ongoing list helps keep us on track.

Think how much sense this would make in so many areas of your life.

One list, that you just pull out and consult, in times like these:

  • Holidays
  • Birthdays
  • Vacations or camping trips
  • Business travel
  • And anything else that you do fairly often and need to get ready for

It’s not hard to do. The hardest part is remembering where you keep the list from year to year. 😉

My suggestion?

A notebook or binder, maybe even your An ADD Woman Takes Charge binder. Or if you use an online service a lot, like Google Docs, you can keep it there. Personally, I think that for those of us with ADHD, paper and pen works best.

I’m in the process of putting together a holiday plan for you to fill in. It’s a lot of work, but I’m trying to get it out before too long so that you can use it this year.

Keep an eye out!
