Life in the ADD Lane

Jump to:

It’s been a while since I’ve posted, and I’m sorry for that. Somehow my life seems to have gotten away from me lately. I’m sure you can relate.

We all seem to have crazy busy lives these days with too much to do and not enough time to do it. I don’t have to tell you what all that is, either; you know – you do it every day.

People with Attention Deficit Disorder, though, seem to add insult to injury when it comes to busy lives. See, we have a couple of things that can work against us if we’re not careful:

  • We have a distorted sense of time when it comes to estimating how long things will take.
  • We tend to procrastinate, putting things off until the last minute (especially if they’re not too interesting), because, hey, we’ve got plenty of time.

Can you see how this can quickly turn into a vicious cycle?

Oh, and I forgot to mention one other ADD characteristic that plays into this: taking risks.

Now, overloading your schedule may not seem like a terribly risky thing. After all, you can’t compare it to rock climbing or bungee jumping.

Still, over committing yourself can be a risk, because you’ve got all these things to do and a limited amount of time to do them in. That’s when the adrenaline kicks in, which is the real point underneath it all.

That, and looking like a superhero for pulling it all off (assuming you do).

Life in the ADD lane isn’t just limited to ADD moms, either. Anyone with Attention Deficit Disorder or Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder is likely to find themselves there at one time or another, maybe more often than not. (Just ask my husband on any given weekend what his plans are and you’ll see what I mean.)

So, is there a way to get out of the ADD fast lane? Well, probably not permanently, but more often?

Yes. I’d like to tell you what that is, but I’ve got 5 minutes before Tuesday turns into Wednesday, and well, I need to finish up today’s stuff before tomorrow gets here. Check back tomorrow for part 2; it’s on my list.
